Mitzi Meyerson
Harpsichordist
Mitzi Meyerson is a world-renowned harpsichordist and teacher. She has a sterling reputation for her live performances and recordings, and has taught innumerable students over the last fifty years, many of whom have become famous performing artists in their own right.
Ms Meyerson specializes in researching little-known or lost works for harpsichord and chamber music, which she then brings to light in recordings. These CD documents have received the highest acclaim, winning international awards and prizes. She discovered the lost collection of "Chamber Airs for the Violin with a Thorough Bass" by Richard Jones, a composer in London at the time of Händel. The world premiere recording of these works was released on the Glossa label. Her CD releases of the solo harpsichord works of Richard Jones, John Jones, and Joseph Antonin Steffan are also world premieres, as are the three projects with “Jones Band,” a trio created especially for the performance of the newly discovered repertoire. The other members are Kreeta María Kentala (violin) and Lauri Pulakka (cello).
As a member Trio Sonnerie — with Monica Huggett (violin) and Sarah Cunningham (viola da gamba) — she toured world-wide and recorded extensively for over a decade.
Her many recordings have met with excellent acclaim. Among the CD prizes she has received are the Choc award from Monde de la Musique, Editor′s Choice from Gramophone Magazine, Diapason d′Or, and BBC Magazine Record of the Month for sonatas of Josef Antonin Stefan. Her two double-disc sets of Georg Böhm and Claude Balbastre (Glossa) were both on the Besten Liste of the prestigious Deutsche Schallplatten Kritik. The two-disc complete harpsichord works of Richard Jones was chosen as CD of the Month by Toccata Magazine, Editor′s Choice in Concerto Magazine. It received excellent reviews from many publications, including Gramophone Magazine, which called it “the best harpsichord disc of the year.”
Mitzi Meyerson has discovered several additional collections of works that have all but disappeared. The most recent recordings are Josef Antonin Steffan “Sonatas for Harpsichord”and François Francoœur “Sonatas for Violin and Continuo.” She continues to do active research in this field.
Ms Meyerson was full professor of historical keyboard instruments for 33 years at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. This position had been specially created for Madame Wanda Landowska, making the university the first institution in modern times to offer harpsichord studies. She specializes in working with modern pianists to obtain a baroque-style perspective in the performance of Bach, developing an awareness of articulation, harmonic structure, and other aspects.
A certified doula (birth assistant), Mitzi Meyerson has been a university lecturer on doula training (Middlesex University, London), and has personally assisted at more than a hundred births. She has a keen love of photography and has been featured in several successful one-woman shows in Germany and England.
She currently resides in Berlin and maintains a lively private studio.
